Mike Is Cooperative and Amiable
It was last June 1 that we embarked on this adventure, searching for nutritional supplements that would make a difference for Mike. So it's been just about a year.
I also have sent his hair in for mercury analysis. We'll see what that says soon I hope!
A few notes. The half-life of it is 18 days - it'll start staying in his system at that point. So you're going to continue to see changes until then.
Second point: at day 12, many parents start seeing detox behaviour when on the cod liver oil. Hold on to your hat. The liver is getting that much needed vitamin A and the rest of the body is getting vitamin D so they go after the previously undetectable viruses (amongst other things) and the killing of those makes enough crazy garbage for the liver to get overwhelmed. And the result of an overwhelmed liver is often behaviour, skin (anything "skin" is the liver according to the experts I talk to) changes, being awake between 1 and 3 in the morning, etc.
Third point: 3 a day is enough to have him make ammonia (thank you, CBS mutations!). Make sure you have that covered by a supplement you already know works or have him checked by the AK.
Fourth point: hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism present with difficulty converting carotenes into vitamin A. So many people with thyroid issues are vitamin A deficient. I would ask the doctor for a full (and I mean FULL - the T3 check costs a bit more but it's soooo useful because T3 is responsible for mood amongst other things) thyroid check: TSH, T4 free and bound, T3 free and bound, thyroid antibodies.
Next, cod liver is full of vitamin D. It's common to ahve vitamin D issues at our latitude. Vitamin D helps dopamine quite a bit. And dopamine is responsible for attachment (many RAD diagnosed kids are just kids that are vitamin D deficient), ADHD type behaviours, concentration, self-control, seasonal depression, and glucose issues. Again, this is something your doctor can check at the next check up. The AK can do so too.
Lastly, vitamin A can be toxic when it's given as cod liver oil because it's fat soluble - make sure you have it dosed by the AK every so many months to make sure the dosage is still appropriate.
That's it for the cod liver oil: so glad it helps him so much.
I'll post again about the hair analysis...
Well - it's great if what you're doing is trying to keep him from cretinism or becoming a criminal... but the range is highly disputed.
The experts I respect speak of the TSH needing to be at 1.5. A TSH of 2 is the most.
I have found that to be ever so true.
At 3.3 I had a nice daughter with no IEP but our schools have 30 different social and study markers they use to guage the children's development. And she was getting satisfactory marks in those areas.
I had her checked by the AK and he did a T4 to T3 conversion check (she was fine, didn't need selenium cysteine) and a T3 to T4 check (she was fine, didn't need iodine)... but then I figured out she was very allergic to iodine while we were in NAET sessions. I knew that meant something in the whole circle of things was off.
I had her checked for pesticides: A-HA! Pesticides and insecticides they spray on wood equipment on playgrounds and on mulch, gets into the body and displaces manganese.
Our kids need more manganese than the others - anyone with liver issues needs more manganese than the other kids.
It also happens that T4 is made from manganese. And manganese is considered responsible for hyperactivity and lack of maternal love.
We had manganese dosed: she needed 5 pills a day for 16 days. Wow the results were immediate.
And she is a lot more caring towards her siblings and friends... and she is more calm... And the TSH came back in the 1.5-2.0 range.
HTH...
Be warned that hair tests are inaccurate. And also be warned that the reading of them and the interpretation of them is two different things.
So for example, a child may have no mercury in their hair: that doesn't mean they don't have mercury in their bodies. It means they are not EXCRETING the mercury. They may though, be excreting zirconium like mad - and that would be a sign that there's mercury pushing zirconium out.
One thing though that I think you'll love is that lithium levels are accurate on hair tests. So you'll be able to see first hand if Mike's deficient in lithium and if this is why he has bipolar behaviour. Lithium also influences the thyroid - so having that thyroid panel done will also be of great advantage in looking at the hair metal test results.
Many believe that bipolar is either hyperthyroid or genetic inability to get rid of vanadium. Vanadium is an important mineral. But non-bipolar people only retain 5% of what they intake. Bipolar people... well... they retain a whole lot more of it. It causes mood swings as the body tries to excrete it. It's found in wheat, pickles, parsley, black pepper, anything petroleum related (like artificial colours, preservatives, etc.)... amongst other things.
It is thought that why lithium is so wonderful to bipolar people is that lithium moves vanadium out of the body. So it does what non-bipolar people can do for themselves.
Vitamin C is also able to move vanadium out of the body, by the way.
IMHO, the best book for the interpretation of hair analysis is the one Andrew Hall Cutler put together. He runs a wonderful newsgroup along with some of the gals talked about in "Evidence of Harm"... You can do a search on "onibasu mercury" and you'll read tons about hair tests and mercury... you can join the yahoo newsgroup "mercury-autism" and ask him questions directly.
I find AKs to be weak when it comes to chelation. They don't seem to understand that disloding mercury is not a safe thing. We need to bind it right out of the body. Also, they don't seem to understand the difference between chelating mercury that's around the body (like with DMSA, DMPS, etc.) and getting mercury out of the cells (my understanding - may be incorrect) which I'm told can only be done with cilantro or ALA.
So get a second opinion on whatever your AK tells you to do about mercury or other toxic metals... it's tricky business.
I don't know that I am getting the details right - so don't blindly repeat my words!
But I still hope it helps...
Also I should add that NAET has found that 100% of their ADHD kids have an allergy to the DPT vaccine they were given, most of them are zinc and magnesium deficient, 50% of them are manganese deficient, some of them are allergic to nightshades, artificials, caffeine.
That last paragraph I just wrote? It would have saved me thousands of dollars if I'd concentrated on just that !
I know you're dealing with bipolar and autism, not ADHD but Yasko feels they are on the same spectrum.
So glad to hear Mike's sleeping better - sleep quality is sooo important, isn't it? Many of the parents I talk to even get sleeping sound machines to help their child attain the deepest levels of sleep so their bodies can repair themselves every single night. I'm looking for one my kids will like - but I've already worked on keeping their rooms cool, blankets heavy, pillows fluffy, and total darkness, since research shows that all of those things promote good neurotransmitter production overnight.
I feel ready for a nap, now !

This blog describes how we started out on the protocol by Dr. Amy Yasko, who many say has cured or improved children with autism using a genetic-based nutrition therapy.
