Brief Bio

First Chapter

Uncle Lucian left Caleb some old sunglasses...

Caleb Miller’s 12th birthday present from his late Uncle Lucian is just an old pair of sunglasses. At least, that’s what Caleb thinks – until he puts them on. Then he finds that the glasses let him see what others cannot.

Caleb finds out that some mysterious men are looking for him as Lucian’s heir.  They’re not just looking for him, either. They’d like to eliminate him.

Lucian’s Legacy is a 60,000-word fantasy novel for middle-grade readers.

Because of the glasses, Caleb realizes that his old friend Ben, the librarian, is not like others. Ben confesses that he is a totally different type of creature, an elder being, now revealed to Caleb.

Ben sends Caleb and his friends Opal and DeJuan to Jubilee Camp, a place of refuge for their eyes only in the local city park.  Here elder beings in the Army of Light gather.  Their leader, Oriel, teaches Caleb and friends methods of self-defense—special words of power.

Soon Caleb and friends find out why the elder beings are coaching them.  A sorcerer named Roark killed Caleb’s uncle Lucian and wants to do the same to Lucian’s heir—Caleb—before Caleb is even of age. Prophecy drives Roark, prophecy that he claims as his own which will set him up as ruler of the world.  A second prophecy says that only Lucian and Lucian’s heir can stop Roark’s quest for power.

A cat-and-mouse pursuit follows.  Elder beings are helping both sides. The book moves toward an exciting final battle.

As the book progresses, Caleb becomes aware of a divide among the elder beings. There are those in the Army of Light who advise him rightly, and there are Lost Ones who urge him to make bad choices. After the final battle, Caleb realizes that the Army of Light had been arrayed behind him unseen the whole time, fulfilling Oriel’s words:  “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Further “Lucian” books are in the works, each beginning with Caleb’s birthday that year and the birthday present left him by Lucian. Each will feature a conflict with Roark.
